"Meditate your ass off".
Rigel Orionis was an ambient music project by the late artist and genre commentator Jim Brenholts.
Jim was a self-taught musician, and he used that term lightly. He never claimed to be a musician but rather preferred to think of himself as a sound manipulator. He took sounds and distorted and mangled them beyond recognition, frequently begging, borrowing and stealing from everyday life to create new sonic worlds. His music generally fell along the lines of textural drone, just as suitable for meditation as for cinema and soundtrack work.
Jim's talent with sound was matched by his wit and humor. He liked to say that no actual instruments were used in the making of his music; and that by self-taught he only meant it in the sense that nobody stopped him from making his particular sounds, not that he ever actually learned anything about making music.
In truth, Jim didn't care if people liked his music or not. That wasn't his point. His primary goal in music making was to make an artistic statement, release it to the world, and just let it hang there like a booger off the end of his nose. If you hated it, he didn't care. If you liked it, he didn't care. As he said on his web site, his only mission was to piss you off.
Those who knew Jim, however, know that he had a heart of gold and genuinely cared both about ambient music and also the musicians and fans who make it and love it. Put simply, he was a hell of a great guy. Jim's time here with us was cut short, but his music lives on, and Earth Mantra could not be happier to help bring some of Jim's back catalog to the world.
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
